Get to know your Anxiety in Inside Out 2

The Inside Out universe is shaping up to be Pixar’s most immersive and memorable experience outside of the Toy Story series. Whereas the series that first put them on the map chronicled a child’s changing feelings and relationships with his toys (and their relationships to each other), Inside Out explores the inner world of a child growing up and grappling with her often conflicting emotions (and their relationships to each other).

The first Inside Out was Pixar’s cleverest concept yet, and was a smashing success. Inside Out 2 is a fantastic follow-up that takes it to the next level as main character Riley hits puberty and is beset by all new emotions. Only if your kid can read will they even know it’s about puberty as the only direct reference is a big button on the brain’s control panel labeled as such that triggers the action, so that stuff will fly over the younger children’s heads, but tweens/teens and adults will have an added layer of entertainment.

The jokes and gags are as clever as ever, and the film buff in me appreciated homages to everything from The Keystone Cops to Network to Magnolia. I especially loved the trip to Riley’s forgotten memories (where we meet the TNT—loving super-helper Pouchy) and the cameo of Nostalgia (can’t wait for her to a have a bigger role in later entries). Meanwhile, the film’s depiction of Anxiety is spot on, and the panic attack trigged by Anxiety out of control and a literal avalanche of bad memories from the back of the mind brought forth by suppressed emotions is a masterclass in storytelling and connecting with the audience.

Inside Out 2 is Pixar in top form. It appeals to all ages. There are plenty of laughs and plenty of people will shed some well-earned tears. It’s big, broad, but bright. The animation is astounding and the voice talent amazing. It’s everything you could ask for from a branded blockbuster sequel. So go ahead and get in touch with your emotions and enjoy.
