Last week launched the release of my latest novel.
Many have wondered where is the title town of West Falls Revisited located?
The novel itself gives plenty of clues. West Falls is on the east coast of the United States, across the river from an unnamed big city, and connected to that city by a high-speed line that also has a stop at a smaller city next-door called Hampten. It’s densely settled along what the residents call the pike, has a quaint but bustling main street, multiple parks and a lake.
Though never explicitly named, the big city is meant to be Philadelphia. Hampten is a fictional stand-in for Camden, NJ.
In terms of location and some key details, West Falls was envisioned as a blend of the three towns clustered on the Patco high-speed line before it hits Camden and Philly – namely Collingswood, Haddon Township/Westmont, and Haddonfield.
Those who live in, or are familiar with the area will likely pick up on the references from the Rialto Theater (a combination of The Ritz and old Westmont Theater) to Ramble Lake (a stand in for Newton Lake) to the local hangout Connie’s Place (an oversized fictional version of Tom Fischer’s Tavern in Haddon Twp with a nod to the former Connie Mack’s out on Route 130 that was leveled and replaced by a Wawa). The “pike” is meant to be the White Horse Pike, and the “main strip/downtown” was inspired by Haddon Avenue.
Various local stories and people served as inpsiration for some of the characters and events in the novel, but everything is ultimately an amalgamation and a work of fiction not meant to represent any one person or event.
Certain physical details of West Falls, as described in the novel, also bear some resemblance to other parts of Philadelphia and its suburbs. At times I pictured the neighborhoods of Mt. Airy, Roxborough, and Manayunk. The gorge beneath the dammed portion of Ramble Lake is meant to be a much smaller version of the Wissahickon gorge. Meanwhile, the dinosaur bones discovered there are a nod to the famous Hadrosaurus unearthed in Haddonfield, NJ.
